Australian Parliament Passes Bill Allowing In Foreign-Flagged Charter Yachts
The Australian Parliament has passed the Special Recreational Vessels Bill 2019 which now allows foreign-flagged vessels to charter within Australian waters.
After failing to pass through parliament in 2015 and 2018, the bill has succeeded at a time when the South Pacific region is set to receive a surge of visitors: The Tokyo Olympics will draw visitors over summer in 2020, and the Millennium Cup and America’s Cup will take place in New Zealand from 2020 to 2021.
The bill replaces previously prohibitive importation requirements and is expected to have immediate effect while the Coastal Trading Act is being revised to take into consideration the use of luxury yachts for business and entertainment purposes.
Non-Australian flagged vessels can now apply for a temporary Trading Coastal License for the commercial purpose of charter, and it is expected the number and variety of superyachts for charter around Australia will increase significantly over the next couple of years. The Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays are some of the most famous and most visited charter spots along the Australian Coast, and cruising around Tasmania, the Kimberley’s and Ningaloo Reef has proven a popular way for visitors to see the stunning coastal landmarks.
Superyacht Australia CEO David Good commented of the bill passing through parliament:
“We have been working tirelessly to achieve this for many years for the industry. The ability to charter in Australia now supplements charter in New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Papua New Guinea where superyacht charter is already permitted and reinforces the South Pacific as a destination of choice for superyachts.”
